The word "sappy" adorns the Bandcamp page of Mormon Toasterhead, a recording project of young song writer Ben Klawans and I see that description as a positive as opposed to knock against it which perhaps it is meant to imply. I feel "sappy" in relation to Mormon Toasterhead is appropriate but a endearing strength. Mormon Toasterhead creates fragile bedroom pop/folk that mixes together natural ambient sounds and field recordings to help serve the songs as snippets of life experiences. Stylistically Klawans shifts back and forth from simplistic bedroom pop, acoustic crooning to more experimental shifts with ambient instrumental forays or reverberating piano exercises and even bedroom Casio tone pop. Mormon Toasterhead's flair to mix all of these styles reminds me a great deal of James McNew's project, Dump, which has been a long personal favorite as well as inspiration of mine. I also sense the aesthetic of early Mountain Goats tape days at times or even a touch of Daniel Johnston's pop sensbilities when I listen to "Summer", a collection of ten songs that seem to echo the longing and eventual loss that one comes to experience with the season.
