Sometimes I can't believe that I have been doing the Stars Are Insane project as long as I have. And furthermore I am surprised that I have accumulated so many songs that didn't have proper homes. Quite frankly there was stuff that I either knowingly omitted, forgot about or wasn't around yet when I issued "So. I Dreamed of Noise" 4x cd-r discography in 2006 so it seemed fitting that I put together a release of this nature. Especially since post "A Plan...A Perfect Disaster" my main focus of output has been compilations and a lathe cut 7 inch of which only 10 copies were made it felt right to harness all of those obscure tracks under one roof before the next two "proper" Stars Are Insane releases come out this year. "#1 Hero You Are the Best: 1998-2012- A Collection of the Rare & Unreleased" compiles seventeen Stars Are Insane tracks all from different periods of the project's history. It isn't intended to be viewed as an album but more so as a collection of ideas. It captures some of the more current Stars Are Insane motifs but some of the old ones are present to whether it be out of tune acoustic guitar emo crooning, layers of tape hiss, noisy guitar skronk fests, etc. Yes, some ideas are not perfect or as refined as I'd like or in some ways even lasting to me, but regardless all of these are pieces of the puzzle that is Stars Are Insane so just as purely an archival piece this release is important to the discography. Featuring covers of songs by Further, Sebadoh and Hayden only solidifies some of the core influences and aesthetics that have been adorned by Stars Are Insane since its inception.
